Lu leads Moanalua to first boys golf title since 2012

Moanalua's Shawn Lu shot a one-under par 71 in the final day of play to claim top honors at the David S. Ishii Foundation/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Boys State Gold Championships at Kauai's Wailua Municipal Golf Course Thursday afternoon.

Lu had a two-day total of 143 strokes (72-71), besting teammates Ray Kim (73-74) and Jun Ho Won (74-73) and Mid-Pacific's Zackary Kaneshiro (76-71) by four strokes.

Back-to-back-to-back birdies on the 11th, 12th and 13th holes vaulted Lu into a commanding position at three-under par, though he bogeyed his final two holes to make things at least a little interesting.

Punahou's Matthew Shen and Kyle Suppa, who shared the first day lead with Lu, each shot a four-over par 76, to finish in a tie for fifth place.

Na Menehune's one-two-three finish also secured the school's first team title since 2012, and broke a streak of three consecutive for the Buffanblu.

Moanalua's team total of 594 strokes was six better than second-place Punahou.
