Repeat winners highlight OIA tennis championships


The Oahu Interscholastic Association held its individual tennis championships at Patsy T. Mink/Central Oahu Regional Park Friday and Saturday.

Farrington's Andre Ilagan repeated as boys singles champion with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Kalani's Darrell Huang. Ilagan did not drop a set in his four tournament matches. He beat Waipahu's Daelan Mangapit, Mililani's Micah Andrade and Aiea's Ford Nakagawa en route to the final.

Pearl City's Sarah Domingo captured the girls singles crown with a 6-4, 6-3 win over defending champion Lisa Owen of Kaiser. Domingo, the West top seed, defeated Moanalua's Bailee Kawamura, Kapolei's Chantelle Lopez and her Pearl City teammate Leslie Fujitani in previous rounds.

The duo of Jace Akagi-Okuma and Davin Lee repeated as boys doubles champions. The Mililani pair rallied past the same team it defeated in last year's OIA final in Kalani's Rayden and Koby Murata. The scores this year were 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Akagi-Okuma and Lee beat their Mililani teammates Tobey Chang and Sean Balignasay 7-6(4), 6-3 in the semifinal round.

The Trojans' girls doubles pair of Haley Fujimori and Alysse Nakasato captured their second straight league championship with a 6-2, 6-4 win over their teammates, Erin Jyo and Taryn Fujimori. They defeated Pearl City's Leilani Yamanouchi and Elyssa Shirai 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinal round.

The Carlsmith Ball/Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Championships will take place at the Mauna Lani Resort on the Big Island, May 5 to 7.

Earlier this month, Kalani defeated Mililani to win the boys team title and Mililani topped Pearl City for the girls team crown.
