WAIKIKI — According to sources close to the situation, Mililani running back Vavae Malepeai will sign a National Letter of Intent Wednesday morning to play football at the University of Southern California next year.

Malepeai, a four-star recruit, finished his decorated prep career with 4,631 rushing yards and 73 touchdowns. He is the all-time leader in both rushing yards and touchdowns in Hawaii prep football history.

As a sophomore in 2013, Malepeai rushed for 1,350 yards and 20 touchdowns, helping the Trojans to a state runner-up finish. He recorded 1,337 yards and 24 TDs to help the Trojans win their first state title in 2014 before racking up a state-best 1,944 yards and 29 TDs as a senior last fall.

Malepeai, who was named All-Hawaii Division I Offensive Player of the Year this year, gave a verbal commitment to the University of Oregon late last summer.

Two independant sources confirmed to ScoringLive Tuesday that Malepeai took an official recruiting visit to USC last weekend, where he had a change of heart.

Malepeai is scheduled to sign his Letter of Intent at the Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance's signing day ceremony at the Sheraton Waikiki Wednesday morning. It is the first day that high school seniors are allowed to sign binding National Letters of Intent.
