June Jones named Kapolei offensive coordinator

Former University of Hawaii football coach June Jones will be the next Kapolei football offensive coordinator, Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez announced Saturday night.

The announcement was made during OC16's broadcast of the Junior Prep Sports Paradise Football Classic games.

Jones steps into a position that opened up after former offensive coordinator Galu Tagovailoa stepped down to spend more time with sons Tua and Taulia, who are the starting quarterbacks for Saint Louis and Kapolei respectively.

Jones coached the Rainbow Warriors from 1999 to 2007 and is the winningest coach in Hawaii football history. In Jones' final year leading the program, the Rainbow Warriors compiled an undefeated regular season record and received an invitation to the Allstate Sugar Bowl, the school's first and only appearance in a Bowl Championship Series bowl game.

After his stint in Hawaii, Jones served as the head coach for Southern Methodist University before resigning in 2014. He later re-applied for the Hawaii coaching job when former head coach Norm Chow was relieved of his duties during the 2015 season. Nick Rolovich, a former player during Jones' tenure, was hired to the position.

Jones also has experience as a head coach in the National Football League, coaching the Atlanta Falcons from 1994 to 1996 along with a ten-game stint as an interim head coach for the San Diego Chargers in 1998.
