Lee-coached Crusaders face formidable Mainland foe

For the second year in a row, Saint Louis will take on a formidable opponent from Mainland when it meets the Liberty Patriots, five-time defending Sunrise Regional champions from Henderson, Nev.

This will be the 20th time a Cal Lee-coached Crusaders team will play a team from out of state, which included a team from Japan (in 1998) and two from Samoa (in 2000 and last weekend). Lee's team are 16-2-1. The first loss came in 1990 against Canyon Country (Calif.), which snapped the Crusaders' 55-game win streak. Last year, Saint Louis lost to St. John Bosco (Calif.), 63-14.

The Crusaders are coming off a 55-6 win against Samoa's Fagaitua; this will be Liberty's first game of the season. The Patriots' next game will be against another Hawaii team, Mililani, the defending state champion and top-ranked team in the state. The Trojans will play at Liberty's campus on Friday.

Farrington's Randall Okimoto is a win away from becoming the school's third coach to join the 100-win club when his team takes on Moanalua Saturday night at Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.

At 99-54-3, Okimoto follows his own coach, Skippa Diaz (104-74-5), and Al Espinda (113-52-5) as the winningest coaches in Governors' history.

Okimoto can become the second coach this season to reach the 100-win mark. Earlier, Kapolei's Darren Hernandez hit the milestone with the Hurricanes' non-league win against Kaiser.  A record in our preview showed another record. Hernandez is 100-87-3 to date. He is the 26th coach to reach century barrier.

Kailua vs. Aiea.  Kailua leads series 15-7-1, but Aiea has won last three meetings.

Kapolei vs. Mililani.  Mililani leads series 9-2.

Moanalua vs. Farrington.  Farrington leads series 8-0. Last year, Moanalua beat Waianae for the first time in 13 meetings.

Nanakuli vs. Kaimuki . Kaimuki leads series 11-4

Baldwin vs. Lahainaluna. Baldwin leads series 89-57-10 dating to 1939. At 156 meetings, this is the seventh-longest rivalry in Hawaii.
