Konawaena basketball girls to play in D.C.

Defending state girls' Division I basketball champion Konawaena has been invited to the Title IX Tournament and Conference, Dec. 27 to 30, at the D.C. Armory in Washington, D.C., according to a press release from Wildcats' athletic director Bill Trumbo and girls' coach Bobbie Awa.

The Wildcats are one of 48 teams invited to the nation's capital to play in the three-day, four-bracket format.  A number of collegiate coaches will be on hand to scout the players.

A companion conference will allow the players to learn about Title IX, as well as about sports, STEM careers, leadership, public speaking, financial literacy, citizenship and civics, the release said.

The Wildcats beat two nationally ranked teams and lost to another at last year's Iolani Classic.

The team is seeking a title sponsor to help defray expenses.  The committee raising funds include Trumbo, Awa and booster Bobby Command.  For information, call Awa at 808-896-6433, Trumbo at 808-936-5708 or Command at 808-895-2416.
