EWA BEACH - In a rare campus appearance, Campbell overwhelmed Waipahu, 13-0, Friday in Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division softball at the Sabers field.

The game ended after the top of the fifth inning because of the 10-run differential mercy rule, as the Sabers improved to 3-0, while the Marauders fell to 0-2.

The game is only one of two the Sabers will play on campus. As perennial contenders, four designated home games were or will be televised. Those games are played at either McKinley or Central Oahu Regional Park.

Sophomore right-hander Danielle Cervantes went the distance, scattering two hits and hitting a batter, while striking out five and not allowing a walk.

"Today, (Cervantes) did all right," Campbell coach Shag Hermosura said. "She was missing her rise pitch. She just needs more reps."

The Sabers wasted little time dispatching the Marauders, scoring in all four innings, including an eight-run third. The top of the orders - leadoff hitter Chardonnay Pantastico and No. 2 hitter Cydney Curran - got on base in six of their eight combined plate appearances, each scoring twice. No. 9 hitter Nikki Corla also scored twice after reaching on two singles. Darien Robinson batted 3 for 3, scoring a run and driving in one. Nashlynn Anguay had two singles and scored once.

Although the Sabers won handily and managed 14 hits, Hermosura said there is room for improvement.

"We were trying to over-power (when batting)," he said. "They have to try to stay within themselves. They have to wait on the ball a little longer."

Gracie Kaopua took the brunt of Campbell's hitting. Waipahu's starting pitcher was a victim of errors during base-running plays.

It does not get easier for the Marauders. They will host Mililani, 3 p.m. Tuesday. The Sabers will travel to McKinley to play Pearl City, 7 p.m. Tuesday.
