OIA girls basketball playoff schedule set


The Oahu Interscholastic Association girls basketball playoffs get underway on Friday, Jan. 30 and run through Thursday, Feb. 5.

East champion Roosevelt and West champion Mililani are the top seeds in the 12-team Division I tournament and drew first-round byes, along with East runner-up Kaiser and West runner-up Nanakuli.

The opening round features East No. 5 Moanalua visiting West No. 4 Leilehua, West No. 6 Waianae visiting East No. 3 Farrington, East No. 6 Kahuku visiting West No. 3 Radford and West No. 5 Campbell visiting East No. 4 Kailua. The winners advance to the quarterfinal Saturday.

Roosevelt will face the Leilehua-Moanalua winner, Nanakuli will play the Farrington-Waianae winner, Kaiser will meet the Radford-Kahuku winner and Mililani will take on the Kailua-Campbell winner. The sites and times of those games are to be determined.

The semifinals will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 3 at McKinley and the winners will advance to the championship game on Feb. 5, also at McKinley. The top six teams will earn a spot in the Division I state tournament.

In the six-team Division II tournament, East champion Kaimuki and West champion Pearl City earned first-round byes. Aiea and McKinley face off in one opening-round game Friday, while Waipahu visits Castle in the other. Kaimuki gets the Aiea-McKinley winner and Pearl City draws the Waipahu-Castle winner in the semifinal round on Feb. 3. The semifinal winners advance to the tournament final on Feb. 5 at McKinley. The top three teams will represent the OIA in the Division II state tournament.
