Punahou boys, Mid-Pacific girls win state air riflery titles


It was a clean sweep by the Interscholastic League of Honolulu at Tuesday's Civilian Marksmanship Program/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Air Rlflery State Championships

The Punahou boys and Mid-Pacific girls won the team titles, while Hawaii's Baptist's Darren Nirei and Saint Francis' Isabel Villanueva won the individual crowns at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall.

The Buffanblu boys scored 2,120 points to 2,103 for runner-up Mid-Pacific. Dean Rodan (535) placed second, Dylan Vodzak (530) fourth, Ryan Ogasawara (527) eighth, and Colby Sakumoto (526) ninth to pace Punahou. Waiakea (2,028), Leilehua (2,001) and Molokai (1,989) rounded out the top five teams.

Zachary Chang, of Mid-Pacific, shot a 534 to place third and Leilehua's James Sison (530) was fifth.

In the girls' competition, the Owls narrowly beat out Pearl City, 2,106 to 2,103, and were led by Meagan Nakamoto, who shot a 535 and placed sixth individually. Finishing third was Waiakea (2,002), followed by Saint Anthony (1,964) and Maui (1,938).

Villanueva shot a 548 to win individual medalist honors. She beat out her own teammate, Toni Silva, by three points. Kailua's Kayla Hooker (542), Pearl City's Danielle Tanabe (541) and Hawaii Baptist's Alexa Yoo (540) rounded out the top five shooters.
