Pac-Five stuns Punahou, 1-0

The ILH Division I league might already be clinched, but the race for the second spot in the state tournament just heated up a little bit more.

Pac-Five's Joshua Wong scored in the 55th minute to help lift the Wolfpack to a 1-0 win over Punahou in an mid-morning match held at Waipio Soccer Complex.

"We did it in my first year and it hasn't happened since," remarked Pac-Five head coach Robert Smock, who is in his ninth season.

"Punahou is a very good team, but our team fought the whole way, and it was good to get that first goal. We feel very fortunate to get this win."

The win by the Wolfpack tightens up the race for second place and the accompanying berth into the HHSAA Division I Boys Soccer Tournament. Iolani (9-0-0) clinched the league title with a 2-1 win over Kamehameha (3-2-4), leaving Punahou (4-2-2) in second, just one point ahead of the third-place Warriors and Wolfpack in the standings.

Pac-Five will close out the regular season with games against Mid-Pac (1/21), at Iolani (1/29), and Damien.

"We haven't been in this position too often," said Smock. "The kids are really excited to be where they are. We have to win out, and just go from there."
