Surfrider Classic tips off Friday

The Surfrider Classic preseason boys basketball tournament starts today at the Kailua High School gymnasium and runs through Saturday.

Three leagues and two islands are represented in the eight-team tournament that features four games daily. Participating teams are Waipahu, Waianae and host-Kailua from Oahu Interscholastic Association, as well as reigning Division II state champion Saint Francis, Kamehameha, Iolani and Iolani II from the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and Lahainaluna of the Maui Interscholastic League.

The action gets under with quarterfinals today. Waipahu takes on Saint Francis at 3:30 p.m., Waianae faces Kamehameha at 5 p.m., Lahainaluna and Iolani will play at 6:30 p.m. and Iolani II and Kailua meet in the nightcap at 8 p.m. Tonight's losers will play in consolation semifinals at 3:30 and 5 p.m. Friday. The winners advance to the championship semifinals at 6:30 and 8 p.m. Both of those games will be live streamed by ScoringLive.

The tournament wraps up Saturday with games at 3, 4:30, 6 and the championship final at 8 p.m.
