Kahuku, Moanalua advance in D1 tournament openers

Oahu Interscholastic Association East representatives went undefeated in the opening day of the New City Nissan/HHSAA Division I Girls Volleyball Championships, as Kahuku swept past Hilo and Moanalua dispatched Leilehua in straight sets in first-round matches played at Kamehameha-Hawaii's Koaia Gymnasium.

Kahuku cruised in sets one and two against Hilo, posting wins of 25-14 and 25-16 respectively. The Vikings rallied to make things more than interesting in the third stanza, but the Red Raiders were not to be denied, earning the sweep with a 26-24 win in the third.

Adora Anae led the way with 19 kills and 9 digs, Talia Afalava added 9 kills, 2 blocks, 5 digs and 2 assists, and Brittany Waite 2 kills and 4 blocks. Setter Talia Brown notched 36 assists to go along with a kill, 2 blocks and 5 digs.

Hilo's Evalani Toledo had 10 kills, 2 digs and 2 assists.

In the first match of the night at Kamehameha-Hawaii, Na Menehune made quick work of the Mules, posting a 25-13, 25-7, 25-11 score line.

Lia Gaogao was a standout offensively for Moanalua, putting down 12 kills and serving up 5 aces. The Na Menehune serve produced 15 aces to the Mules' eight.

Up next for Kahuku is a clash with top overall seed Kamehameha-Kapalama in the second game of the evening set for 7:00 p.m. back at Kamehameha-Hawaii, while Moanalua takes on fourth-seeded Kamehameha-Maui at 5:00 p.m.
