Honokaa to forfeit BIIF D2 semifinal against Konawaena

Honokaa will forfeit its Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division II semifinal against Konawaena, Big Island Now's Josh Pacheco reported Thursday morning.

Athletic Director Keith Tolentino told Pacheco that injuries won't allow the Dragons to take the field against the Wildcats as scheduled Friday night.

“The numbers was real low," Tolentino said. "On Monday, we only had 16 guys, then the next day we had 21, and Wednesday we had 22. I cannot go to Kona to play with 22 guys.”

The Dragons were the No. 4 seed in the four-team tournament after an 0-7 regular season and will finish with an 0-9 overall record. Konawaena, the top seed with a 7-2 overall mark, will host the winner of Saturday's semifinal between Kamehameha-Hawaii and Hawaii Prep in the league championship game on Nov. 1 at Julian Yates Field.

In the Division I semifinals this weekend, fourth-seeded Keaau takes on top-seed Hilo Friday at Francis Wong Stadium while third-seeded Waiakea visits second-seeded Kealakehe Saturday night.
