Oney steps down as wrestling head coach at Punahou

Punahou School announced today that Matt Oney, head coach for boys and girls wrestling, will be stepping down in order to focus on school projects.

Over the course of 24 years as a wrestling coach at Punahou, Oney led Buffanblu girls to three ILH titles (2009, 2011 and 2012) and three state championships (2009-2011), and Buffablu boys to seven consecutive ILH titles (2006-2012) and six consecutive state championships (2007-2012).

"It's been a humbling experience and an honor to work with Punahou's wrestling students and their parents," said Oney, a high school math teacher at the School. "As coaches, we feel very blessed to have been a small part of our students' life experiences."

Punahou Athletic Director Jeaney Garcia thanked Oney for his long-standing commitment and his many positive contributions. "Matt has developed our wrestling program to the highest level, infusing it with his passion for the sport," she said. "He is fully dedicated to the development of students, who will continue to benefit from the strong foundation he's established at Punahou."
