Brandon Kekoa rushed for 99 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries and Kaimuki limited McKinley to 98 yards of total offense last night in a 22-0 victory at Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.
It was the O'ahu Interscholastic Association White Conference opener for both teams; the defending champion Bulldogs improved to 2-0 overall while the Tigers fell to 1-1.
Kaimuki took a 7-0 lead with 47 seconds left in the first quarter after Nainoa Spencer found Kanoe Barcenas on an 8-yard inside screen. Keoki Kaiahua added the extra point.
That's how the score remained until 2:25 left in the third quarter, when Kekoa -- playing linebacker -- hit McKinley quarterback Alex Ironside in the Tigers' end zone and jarred the ball loose. It rolled out of bounds for a safety.
The Bulldogs defense scored again barely three minutes into the fourth quarter, as defensive lineman Amu Moefu snared a ricocheted swing pass in midair and ran it in from four yards out for a touchdown. Kaiahua's PAT made it 16-0.
Kaimuki then effectively sealed the game with 4:21 remaining when Kekoa dashed 21 yards off right tackle for a TD.
The Bulldogs limited McKinley to 11 yards rushing on 16 carries.
