OIA boys' basketball tournaments start Friday


The 12-team O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red boys' basketball tournament begins Friday at various sites.

East top seed Kalaheo and runner-up Moanalua, as well as West top seed Kapolei and runner-up Pearl City draw first-round byes and will host quarterfinals Saturday.

In Friday's openers, McKinley will visit Campbell, Farrington will host Radford, Roosevelt will travel to Mililani and Leilehua will play at Kahuku. All games start at 6 p.m., except for a 7 p.m. start at Mililani.

In Saturday's quarterfinals, the winner of Campbell-McKinley will play at Kalaheo; the winner of Farrington-Radford will visit Pearl City; the winner of Mililani-Roosevelt will travel to Moanalua; and the winner of Kahuku-Leilehua will play at Kapolei. All game times are 6 p.m., except for Moanalua, which as a 6:30 p.m. start.

The semifinals are set for Feb. 13 at McKinley with the championship on Feb. 16, also at McKinley.

The top six teams earn Division I state tournament berths.

The six-team White tournament also starts Friday.

Kaiser will visit 'Aiea and Nanakuli will travel to Kalani. Both games are 7 p.m.

The winners advance to the semifinals Saturday. The winner of 'Aiea-Kaiser goes to Kailua and the winner of Kalani-Nanakuli visits Waianae. Both start 6 p.m.

The winners advance to the title game 5 p.m. Feb. 16 at McKinley.

Only the top two teams advance to the Division II state tournament.
