Defending Division I state champion 'Iolani survived a late scare to hold off Farrington, 46-42, Saturday night to capture the inaugural California Hotel AOP Hoop Classic boys' basketball championship at the Richard S. Kitamura Memorial Fieldhouse at Farrington.

Trailing 44-41, Farrington's Jeffrey Madarang missed a 3-pointer with 43 seconds left. 'Iolani's Jourdan Simmons got the rebound, but Farrington's Ryan Reyes stole the ball and was intentionally fouled by Simmons with 41 seconds left.

But Reyes only converted his second free throw to pull the Governors to 44-42. The Governors then inbounded the ball and called time with 29 seconds left. When play resumed, Farrington tried looking an open 3, but J.P. Seycon found an opening and drove to the hoop, but missed with 10 seconds left. 'Iolani's Duke Pauli was fouled in the process and made his two free throws for the margin of victory.

"It was a very good shot," Farrington coach Allan Silva said of Seycon's missed shot. "It just came off the rim."

Seycon led all scorers with 19 points, but a trio of Raiders - Gabriel Vega, Kainoa Scheer and Reid Saito - combined for 33 with 11 points each.

The frantic finish was the kind of test the Raiders needed, as they will face tough competition again when their annual 'Iolani Classic start Thursday.

"Whenever you have a close game, it always comes down to toughness," 'Iolani coach Dean Shimamoto said. "Get a stop, get a rebound when we needed to. It wasn't the prettiest, but I like the toughness and I like the type of grit because when it comes down to ILH play and tournament time, that's one of the biggest things, the toughness."

The Governors rallied from a 22-15 half-time deficit to take a 31-29 lead a little past the midway point in the third quarter, but the Raiders took a 33-31 lead by the end of the quarter.

Farrington muscled its way back to pull to within 43-41 with 1:51 left. Scheer made one of two free throws with 1:28 left to cushion the Raiders' lead to 44-41 before the intentional foul threatened 'Iolani's lead.

The Raiders used their height to control the boards.

"We have to get better," Silva said. "Offensively, defensively. We missed over 15 points under the basket tonight. We just have to finish our shots."

The tournament was hosted by the Academy of the Pacific, which found a host of sponsors and gave away raffle prizes, including a trip for two to Las Vegas and three 21-inch flat screen TVs.

AOP tops Moanalua, 43- 32

Micah Dunhour scored 16 points and Moritz Krume added 13 as host Academy of the Pacific defeated Moanalua, 43-32, to claim third place in the AOP Classic.

Wesley Armburst led Na Menehune with 13 points.
