Coastal Carolina denies San Jose State to claim Hawaii Bowl

MANOA — Freshman quarterback Ethan Vasko threw for 199 yards and three touchdowns on 20-of-33 passing to lead Coastal Carolina to a 24-14 win over San Jose State in the EastPost Hawaii Bowl Saturday night.

A crowd of about 4,000 fans at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletic Complex saw the Chanticleers finish out the year with a 8-5 record, while the Spartans saw their six-game win streak snapped to close a 7-6 campaign.

Vasko threw a pair of 2-yard touchdown passes to Matt Alaimo and Kendall Karr and also found Sam Pinckney for an 8-yard scoring strike in the closing minutes. Vasko was not intercepted and sacked just once; He also finished as his team's leading rusher with 17 carries for 50 yards.

Coastal Carolina tallied 336 yards of total offense, including 137 rushing yards.

San Jose State recorded 374 total yards, including 215 passing from quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, a former Saint Louis standout. Cordeiro completed 16 of his 30 pass attempts without an interception.

Cordeiro's 35-yard touchdown pass to Sam Olson got the Spartans on the board at the 12:27 mark of the fourth quarter. About four minutes later, they cut it to a 17-14 deficit after a 12-yard TD run by Quali Conley.

The Chanticleers recycled a pair of San Jose State fumbles into a couple of scores of their own, including Kade Hensley's 49-yard field goal that gave his team a 17-0 cushion with 14:16 left to play.

Vasko was selected by media as the game's most valuable player.
