MANOA - Dylan Villanueva can play small ball or long ball.

Villanueva doubled home the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning and Hilo edged Moanalua, 4-3, in Tuesday's first round of the Wally Yonamine Foundation Division I state baseball tournament at Les Murakami Stadium.

The Big Island Interscholastic Federation runner-up will play fourth-seeded Campbell in Wednesday's quarterfinal at 10 a.m.

With a runner at third with two out, Villanueva doubled to right-center to score Legend Lancaster to break a 3-all game. Earlier in the game, the Vikings scored their first run on Villanueva's suicide squeeze that ignited a three-run fourth that gave Hilo a 3-1 lead.

"I liked the squeeze better than that, but that (run-scoring double) was clutch," Hilo coach Baba Lancaster said.

Mekenna Wakakuwa, the third pitcher for Hilo, pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief to get the win.

Hilo took a 3-1 lead in the fourth against Moanalua starter Koen Smith. A single and two walks loaded the bases for Villanueva was successful on a suicide squeeze to tie the game at 1. Boston Kobayashi followed with a two-run single to make it 3-1.

But Moanalua tied the game in the bottom of the fourth against Hilo's second pitcher, KJ Marzo. Pinch hitter Rylan Li walked and took second on Jake Ferreira's bunt single to third. After Smith struck out, Rayden Miguel grounded out to shortstop to advance the runners. Shayde Koga singled to third to score Li, but a throwing error by third baseman Villanueva allowed Ferreira to score the tying run before Kaiden Sonoda-Fukumoto fouled out to first to end the inning.

The game stayed tied until the eighth. With one out, Lancaster walked and Zion Palea lined out to center. Lancaster stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Villanueva's double.

"I was just thinking stay calm," Villanueva said, "do it for the team."

Moanalua threatened in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Nathynn Alvaro reached on Villanueva's second error of the game. Reyn Ikenaga singled to put runners at first and second before Dawson Sugawa grounded out to third to put the runners in scoring position. But Wakakuwa got Ferreira to fly out to left to end the game.

Coach Lancaster said an injury to Legend Lancaster forced him to put Wakakuwa in relief; he is normally a starter.
