Hawaii pulls away from Army for fourth straight win

HALAWA — Cole McDonald overcame flu-like symptoms and came off the bench to lead Hawaii to a 52-31 win over Army in a non-conference game at Aloha Stadium Saturday night.

The Rainbow Warriors improved to 9-4 on the season with the fourth consecutive victory, while the Black Knights fell to 5-7 and were eliminated from bowl contention.

McDonald, who missed a few practices during the week, completed 19 of 29 passes for 250 yards in relief of starter Chevan Cordeiro, who left the game due to injury in the second quarter. McDonald threw touchdown passes of 4, 7 and 20 yards to Jason-Matthew Sharsh, JoJo Ward and Jared Smart, respectively.

Smart finished with eight receptions for 123 yards, Sharsh had six grabs for 80 yards — including a 26-yard TD pass from Cordeiro — and Cedric Byrd II added eight catches for 122 yards. Byrd was on the receiving end of a 25-yard scoring strike from Cordeiro, who completed 7 of 12 pass attempts for 109 yards.

Neither McDonald nor Cordeiro were intercepted.

Miles Reed tallied 92 yards rushing on 10 carries and capped Hawaii's opening drive of the second half with his 1-yard TD run.

Christian Anderson ran for a game-high 114 yards on 12 carries. He entered the game in the second quarter after Army starting quarterback Kelvin Hopkins, Jr. left with an injury.

Sandon McCoy rushed for two of Army's four touchdowns and finished with 15 carries for 91 yards.

The Black Knights ran for 411 of their 538 yards of total offense, while the Rainbow Warriors passed for 359 of their 492 total yards.

Hawaii led at halftime, 24-17.

Rojesterman Farris II closed out the scoring with his 100-yard interception return for touchdown with 1:34 to play.

The Rainbow Warriors are now 4-1 all-time against Army and have won four consecutive games for the first time under Rolovich.

Hawaii will make its first appearance in the Mountain West Conference championship game when it visits No. 20 Boise State next Saturday.
