If you stayed up to watch the final game at Iron Maehara Stadium Wednesday night, you were treated to a firework show at the end.

Kailua exploded for nine runs in the top of the ninth inning to advance over Maui, 10-1, in the opening round of the Wally Yonamine Foundation Division I Baseball Championships.

The Surfriders move on to face third-seeded Hilo in a 1:30 p.m. quarterfinal Thursday.

Jalen Ah Yat picked up the pitching win after stepping on the mound to start the bottom of the eighth inning. He also reached on an error in the top of the ninth that ignited a string of hits that saw Kailua send 13 batters to the plate in its nine-run ninth inning.

Kayde Iranon was also key with base hits in his first four at bats.

The Surfriders took the early lead in the second inning after scoring on a wild pitch. They did their best to keep the Sabers at bay, but allowed the tying run to come home after a two-out bases on ball in the bottom of the seventh.
