It was only a matter of time for the Kaiser baseball team.
After leaving a runner on base in each of the first three innings, the Cougars scored in the final four frames for a 6-4 win over Campbell in the opening game of the Wally Yonamine Foundation Division I Baseball Championships at Iron Maehara Stadium.
Gyson Oshiro tripled and drove in three runs — two coming in the top of the seventh after Campbell made it a 4-3 game in the sixth — to help Kaiser advance to face second-seeded Punahou Thursday in a 4:15 p.m. quarterfinal.
Senior ace Pono Lyman pitched his first complete game of the season to earn the win for the Cougars. It was arguably one of his best performances of the year with five strikeouts against zero walks; he entered the game with 28 bases on balls in 29 innings pitched.
Dayton Robinson took the loss for the Sabers. He gave up seven hits and three earned runs in five innings of work. Robinson also tossed five strikeouts, but they all came in the first three innings.
Ikaika Ganancial tripled and Cody Ranit had two singles to lead Campbell in the loss.
