Konawaena takes down defending champ Aiea, 7-3

Down go the champs.

An uncaught strikeout led to five unearned runs in the top of the seventh as Konawaena rallied past defending state champ Aiea, 7-3, Tuesday afternoon at McKinley's Tiger Softball Stadium in the opening round of the DataHouse/HHSAA Division II Softball Championships.

The Wildcats move on to face top-seeded Kapaa Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. in the quarterfinals.

Konawaena leadoff batter Rachel Sato struck out for what would have been the second out of the top of the seventh, but reached on the dropped ball. A sacrifice bunt by Andi Uemura and an intentional walk to Shaylann Marie Grace set up Jayla Medeiros' two-run single to give Konawaena a 4-3 lead.

Kaimana Joy Manzano, who went 3-for-4 at the plate, doubled to plate Medeiros and Erin Kaimuola-Bates drilled a two-run home run for the final scores of the game.

Grace scattered 10 hits in a complete game effort to earn the win in the circle.

Aiea's Trinity Atuatasi hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to give Na Alii a 3-2 lead after six innings.

Waimea first baseman Kieren Henderson drove in five total runs on two homers and a double in the Menehunes' win over Waialua.

It just didn't stop.

Waimea scored nine runs in the bottom of the first inning and added to its total in the final four stanzas to knock out Waialua in six innings, 15-5, Tuesday night in the opening round of the DataHouse/HHSAA Division II Softball Championships at McKinley's Tiger Softball Stadium.

First baseman Kieren Henderson piled up five RBIs on two homers and one double to power the Menehunes into the quarterfinals against third-seeded Kalani. First pitch is slated for 4:30 p.m.

Starlynn Ripley was also key at the plate, batting 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored as Waimea racked up 17 total hits in the contest.

Shandalyn Kuhlmann earned the win in the circle after shaking off a four run first inning.

The Bulldogs, who were mercy-ruled for the first time this season, were led by Andrea Dicion in the loss. Dicion batted 3-for-3 with a double and a solo home run in the top of the second.

Honokaa pitcher Tehani Epenesa threw eight strikeouts in a complete game effort and hit a home run to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Honokaa outlasts Kaimuki, 11-8
It wasn't pretty, but the Honokaa softball team will take it.

The Dragons scored four unanswered runs to close the ball game as Honokaa edged Kaimuki, 11-8, in the opening round of the DataHouse/HHSAA Division I Softball Championships Tuesday afternoon at McKinley's Tiger Softball Stadium.

Honokaa pitcher Tehani Epenesa threw eight strikeouts in a complete game effort and hit a solo home run to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth inning to help the Dragons advance to face second-seeded Kamehameha-Hawaii at 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday.

Natasha Molina, Taylor Tabubuc and Xyan Ancheta each had multiple hits and Ceelyn Gail-Lucero racked up three RBIs to lead Honokaa at the plate.

The Dragons took an 6-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning, plating their first six batters and chasing Kaimuki starter Chasry Lum-King with no outs in the frame.

Kaimuki tied the game up in the top of the third, but Honokaa came right back with another run to make it a 7-6 game after three innings of play.

The Bulldogs answered with two runs in the next inning to take their first lead since the opening stanza before Epenesa drilled a solo shot to tie the game in the fifth.

Saint Francis smashed five total home runs with two triples and two doubles in a 10-0 mercy-rule win over Kohala in the first game of the opening round of the DataHouse/HHSAA Division II Softball Championships Tuesday afternoon at McKinley's Tiger Softball Stadium.

Kaena Keliinoi and Sammie Ofoia each hit two homers to power the Saints into the quarterfinals against fourth-seeded Molokai. The two teams will play Wednesday at noon.

Sierra Kupihea was the game's winning pitcher, throwing six strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings of no-hit ball.

Mikayla Kekoa, the Cowgirls' starting pitcher, and Kalia Tabiolo-Amaral each had hits to lead Kohala in the loss.
