Punahou senior Mariel Galdiano is two strokes back of teammate Allisen Corpuz after the first round of the David S. Ishii Foundation/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Girls State Golf Championships Monday at the Wailua Municipal Golf Course on Kauai.
Corpuz, who finished the round with a 2-under 70, was the lone player to shoot under par. She opened her round with a birdie on the 497-yard, par-5 first hole then made par on the next four holes before a biride on the 371-yard, par-4 sixth hole. Corpuz dropped a shot with a bogey on the 427-yard, par-5 ninth hole, which played as the toughest hole at an average of 5.394 strokes per play on Monday. She made par on every hole on the back nine, except for the 416-yard, par-4 15th, which she biridied.
Galdiano, who is seeking an unprecedented fourth individual state championship, shot a 36 both going out and coming in. She bogeyed No. 8 (par 4, 382 yards) and the closing hole, No. 18 (par 4, 371 yards), but was one of only 14 players in the 66-person field to play the ninth hole under par. Galdiano also birided No. 5 and had back-to-back birdies on the 13th (par 5, 456 yards) and 14th (par 3, 148 yards) holes.
Kamehamehai's Lorraine Char and Mid-Pacific's Erica Chiang are each three strokes back of Corpuz at 1-over par 73. Maryknoll's Allysha Mae Mateo (74) and Iolani's Chloe Wong (75) follow.
Punahou leads the team standings at 3-over par (219 strokes). Mid-Pacific and Iolani are tied for second at 16-over (232 strokes).
The final round gets underway at 7 a.m. Tuesday.
