WAIPIO — Maya Yoshiura knew something small would get the job done.

The junior shortstop came up big with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Mililani to a 3-2 walkoff win over Kapolei on a calm, cool evening at Patsy T. Mink/Central Oahu Regional Park Saturday night.

The Trojans, who are ranked second in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Softball Power Rankings, improved to 4-0 to keep pace with top-ranked Campbell atop the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I West standings.

The fourth-ranked Hurricanes suffered their first loss to fall to 3-1.

Yoshiura, the No. 2 batter in the Mililani lineup, lined a 1-0 pitch from Kapolei pitcher Sadie Kapaku-You back up the middle to plate pinch runner Maya Saneishi from third base to end the game.

"I was just trying to hit a ball somewhere solid," Yoshiura said. "I knew we had zero outs, so just something solid would score a runner from third."

Jerae Keliikoa led off the bottom of the seventh by reaching on a two-base error before Saneishi replaced her at second base. Saneishi moved to third on a single by Brooke Yasuda and leadoff hitter Keri Togami reached on an error to load the bases for Yoshiura.

"She made contact all game," Mililani coach Rose Antonio said of Yoshiura. "She has power to hit it out there so we can tag up and stuff, but she has power to hit it over the fence, too. It was a good at-bat for her."

Aubree Kim struck out four batters in 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Misha Carreira and was the winning pitcher. Kim retired six of the seven batters she faced. The lone hit she allowed — to clean-up hitter Sala Pedebone — was negated when Pedebone was caught stealing by catcher Markie Okamoto.

Carreira went 4 2/3 innings and allowed five hits. She struck out two and walked none, but was lifted in favor of Kim after surrendering a two-run home run to Tayzha Meyers with two outs in the top of the fifth inning.

"Misha did wonderful; I'm very proud of what she did," Antonio said. "It was just that one pitch that turned it around. They tied it up and we decided to switch."

The Trojans loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the first, but Kapaku-You got a force out at second to get out of the jam. They finally got on the board in the fourth on a solo home run by Shannon Pascua-Stanton.

"That really got us going," Yoshiura said. "She made the best contact and just gave us a spark."

The very next batter, Tracie Okumura, singled after working the count full. She advanced to second on a sacrifice by Okamoto and came around to score on a single by Jerae Keliikoa, who lined the 10th pitch she saw from Kapaku-You to centerfield.

Kapolei answered right away with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Shaycelynn Hoohuli hit a two-out, first-pitch single and two pitches later, Meyers crushed a 1-0 pitch from Carreira over the fence in right center.

Pedebone batted 2 for 3 with a double in the loss. Kapaku-You went the distance and allowed eight hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

The Hurricanes had scored 29 runs in their first three games of the season. They were held to six hits Saturday.

"We knew coming into game the that Kapolei is a really good team," Yoshiura said. "They can hit the ball really well, so we just had to be good on defense and to try and get our runners in when we can."

Mililani will face its second undefeated team in as many games when it visits Campbell Tuesday. First pitch between the Trojans and Sabers is scheduled for 3 p.m. It will be a rematch of last year's Division I state final.
