A strong defensive effort helped Radford top visiting Waianae, 34-13 in its Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division season-opener at James Alegre Gymnasium Tuesday night.

Guards Jazmyn Peralta and Puni Seei each scored eight points apiece to help the Rams (1-4 overall, 1-0 OIA West) notch their first win of the year. The Seariders dropped to 0-2 in conference play. 

Radford held the Seariders to two or less points in three of the four periods. The closest quarter between the two teams was in the second when the Rams outscored Waianae, 11-8. 

Freshman Briana Nakihei led the Seariders with six points in the loss, scoring all of her points in the second period.

Aiea transfer Kyle Johnson and junior forward Denise Bell led the Radford scoring effort in the paint and notched six points each.

Radford was 9 of 15 at the free throw line while Waianae converted on just three of its 14 trips to the charity stripe. 

The Rams host Pearl City on Thursday while the Seariders travel to Waipahu on Saturday.
