ALIAMANU – Defending state champion Iolani definitely looked the part in its 68-32 rout of host Radford on the third night of the 16th annual James Alegre Invitational Friday.

Leading the way for the visiting Raiders was junior swingman Robbie Mann with a game-high 12 points on 6-for-7 shooting. Mann, a rotational player last year, also added six rebounds, an assist and a steal. 

"I lost a lot of weight form last year, like 20 pounds. I've been working out everyday in the weight room and in the gym with coach Dean (Shimamoto). He's been helping me work on my handles and finishing and shooting," Mann said on his transition from role player to starter.

Reserve Shane Lay was the next highest scorer for Iolani with seven points. Pikai Winchester, Hugh Hogland, Erik Yamada and Bryson Hamada each added six points for the Raiders.

Defensively the Raiders held Radford to 9 of 33 shooting (27.3 percent) from the field. Iolani also was able to come away with 16 total steals. Reserve post Kamu Borden also added two blocked shots.

"I say props to Hugh and Kamu and our big guys because they just put their arms up and they block pretty much everything. Props to our guards for rotating and always having a hand up," Mann said on the team's defensive effort.

Iolani also had a strong advantage on the boards, out rebounding the home team 46-28. The Raiders' prowess on the offensive glass (25 total offensive rebounds) gave them double the amount of shot attempts that the Rams had. Hogland and Lay led the rebounding effort with nine and eight boards respectively. 

"We made rebounding a point today," explained Iolani coach Dean Shimamoto. "Whether it was defensive or offensive, we wanted to focus on (it). We didn't do a good job on it last night (against Mililani). "That was something we wanted to get better on and we did a good job on it today."

Radford's Latoine Thompson finished with a team-high nine points on two made 3-pointers and a 3-for-4 performance at the free throw line. Brandon Campbell scored eight points and Jordan Gober added seven more to help pace the home team.

Iolani started the contest with a 6-0 run with Yamada assisting on two of the first three field goals. A handful of Radford free throws would cut the lead in half before Borden's 3-point play with 3:35 left in the opening period. The Rams were not able to hit a field goal until Gober converted on a jumper at the 2:49 mark. After Gober's jumper, the Raiders went on a 9-0 run to take an 18-5 lead after the first quarter.

Hogland, who was hampered with two fouls in the opening period, notched five of his six points in the second quarter. The 6-foot-8 sophomore's contributions would help the Raiders take a 36-17 lead at the break.

Iolani continued to push after halftime with Mann, Yamada and Hamada combining to score 14 of the Raiders' 18 third quarter points. With the game well in hand in the fourth quarter, Iolani was able to empty its bench to give its reserves some quality playing time.

The Raiders will play their final game of the Alegre Invitational against Moanalua while Radford concludes with Honokaa.
