The OIA-ILH Challenge tipped off Wednesday at Moanalua High School and concludes Friday with a homecoming of sorts.
Kamehameha, under first-year coach Greg Tacon, will take on host-Moanalua, under former Tacon assistant Byron Mello, in the final game of the three-day tournament. Tipoff between the Warriors and Na Menehune is slated for 8:30 p.m. It will be the fourth game of the day, following Saint Louis-Kahuku at 4 p.m., Punahou-Kalani at 5:30 p.m. and Maryknoll-Farrington at 7 p.m.
Tacon spent the last seven seasons as head coach at Moanalua and led the school to six state-tournament appearances before taking the job at Kamehameha in the offseason. Na Menehune won back-to-back OIA Red (Division I) championships in 2010 and 2011.
The Warriors opened the preseason with wins over Mililani, Waianae and Kailua before suffering consecutive losses to Iolani, Saint Francis and Farrington. Kamehameha takes on Kahuku Thursday night in the second day of the OIA-ILH Challenge.
Junior guard Jaycob Smith leads Kamehameha in scoring with 11.7 points per game, while senior guard Noa Kinimaka is contributing 10.4 points per game.
Moanalua is off to a 4-1 start heading into Thursday's game against Punahou. Na Menehune has beaten Mililani, Damien, Waianae and Aiea before Wednesday night's loss to Maryknoll. Senior guard Jamaal Willis scored a team-high 19 points and senior forward Aaron Stuart added 10 points against the reigning state runner-up Spartans.
ScoringLive will livestream both the Maryknoll-Farrington and Kamehameha-Moanalua games.
