Kaleb Gilmore and Joshua Burnett scored 12 a piece to lead Maryknoll over Kahuku, 64-26, Friday night in the Na Menehune OIA/ILH Challenge at Moanalua High's gym.Maryknoll would use a 24 point second quarter to coast to the win. The Spartans were able to score double digits in each quarter while the Red Raiders averaged 6.5 points per quarter.Defense set the tone early as neither team scored a basket in the first two minutes of play. Maryknoll would then go on an 8-0 run that was capped off by a Burnett dunk before Kahuku called a time out. The Spartan defense was anchored by their centers Tobias Schramm and Hyrum Harris, both 6'9 and 6'5 respectively. Maryknoll would not give up any easy points as Kahuku’s first points came off a steal and layup by Will Cravens with 2:35 left in the first period.Kahuku would close the quarter on a strong note as leading scorer Hirkley Latu would get his basket to go and the foul. At the end of the first Maryknoll led 13-6.In the 2nd quarter it was all Maryknoll. Harris would get the offensive rebound tip in to make the score 17-8 and then there was no turning back for the Spartans. Maryknoll would then go on an offensive flurry led by Burnett who scored 10 points in the quarter.Burnett showed some flare as he stole a ball from a Kahuku player and went coast to coast to get the bucket. He also was able to hammer it home with a dunk from an alley-oop dunk from teammate Tobias Powell. Gilmore also chipped in with a 3 point shot to help give Maryknoll a 37-15 lead at the half.Kahuku would try to mount a comeback in the 2nd half but Maryknoll’s defense held strong and limited the Red Raiders to just 11 points in the second half which left the final score 64-26 to help the Spartans remain undefeated.Maryknoll will face Moanalua, while Kahuku will face Punahou in the last night of the Na Menehune OIA/ILH Challenge.
