Southlake (Texas) Carroll used an 11-0 run overlapping the third and fourth periods Thursday night to pull away from Maryknoll, 56-45, in the first round of the Sixth Annual 'Iolani Prep Classic girls basketball tournament.

Carroll, which finished last season at 31-4 and ranked second in the state, advances to Friday's 6:30 p.m. semifinal vs. Oregon City (Ore.). Maryknoll, which finished third in last season's Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Division II State Championships, will face DI fourth-place finisher Lahainaluna in a consolation bracket game at 3:30.

Maryknoll has moved up to Division I this year and showed it is ready for the transition, playing Carroll even for much of the game and earning the respect of its longtime coach, Terri Morrison.

"They're very physical, very well-coached," said Morrison, who has 550 victories in her 29-year career. "They controlled the first half, and it was a tough game for us. (The Spartans) played hard, and they played smart."

Maryknoll took a 28-26 lead into halftime after Maegan Martin's steal and layup with four seconds remaining, but the Lady Dragons opened the third period with a 15-6 run capped by Kennedy Leonard's 3-pointer which made it 41-34. The Spartans got two free throws from Kaile Cambra and then a layup by Siena Shupe to cut it to 41-38 with 25 seconds left, but Madison Drescher's three-point play with three seconds remaining pushed the lead to 44-38 heading into the fourth.

Carroll then opened the final quarter with eight straight points, capped by Kami Mickens' three-point play with 4:10 left, to stretch it to 52-38. Maryknoll could not get closer than nine points the rest of the way.

"I think part of that is we got tired," Spartans coach Chico Furtado said. "But I'm really happy with our intensity, that was the hardest we've played all season. It's a step in the right direction, because that is what we wanted to improve on in the preseason. In Division I, you cannot just go through the motions because if you do, you'll get spanked."

Leonard, a 5-foot-8 sophomore guard, and Drescher, a 6-1 sophomore post, each scored 14 points to lead the Lady Dragons.

Lindsey Lee led Maryknoll with 11 points and Martin added 10 points.

Oregon City (Ore.) 81, Lahainaluna 42

Johanna Paine scored 17 points, Jessica Gertz added 15 points and Jenae Paine contributed 14 points to lead the Pioneers, who jumped out to a 21-2 lead in the first four minutes with a fast-paced attack.

Oregon City led 35-9 after one period and 54-24 at halftime.

"We saw them at the End of the Trail Tournament (in Oregon) last summer, so we knew what to expect," Lunas coach Todd Rickard said. "When you play a really good, polished team like that, it's more about effort. They put pressure on you, and with their size, we don't have the depth to keep up with them. And if you play timid, they'll take advantage of you.

"It's a different level from the local teams we've played so far."

Lindsey Bates, a sophomore guard, led Lahainaluna with 17 points.

'Iolani 54, Moanalua 29

Alex Masaquel and Klein Masutani each scored 10 points to lead the Raiders, who will face Dr. Phillips (Orlando) in Friday's 8 p.m. semifinal. Dr. Phillips is ranked No. 11 in USA Today's Super 25.

'Iolani finished the first period with a 14-1 run to lead 18-5 heading into the second, then went up, 31-13, at halftime. Na Menehune could not get closer than 10 points in the second half.

Moanalua will face Jin Ling (Nan Ling, China) in Friday's 5 p.m. consolation bracket game.

Dr. Phillips (Orlando) 61, Jin Ling 43

Hannah Schaible scored a game-high 23 points and Sydnei McCaskill added 10 points to help the Panthers pull away from Jin Ling. which took a brief 31-30 lead early in the second half before Dr. Phillips ended the third period with a 19-5 run.
