UH standout Klaneski named Damien head football coach

Two-time All-WAC defensive back and two-time University of Hawaii football team MVP Eddie Klaneski has been named head varsity football coach of Damien Memorial School, according to athletic director Wally Aina Jr.

Klaneski, one of the most popular players in UH history for his passion on the field was selected one of the 100 all-time greatest UH players by the Honolulu Star-Bulletin in 2009.

Klaneski, 35, learned the news as he was preparing to take his Damien track and field team to the Hawaii High School Athletic Association championships on Maui.

He has been head track and field coach for seven years, leading the team to a fourth place finish in the 2009 HHSAA championships despite a roster of 10.

As a UH player he led the team in tackles and interceptions in his junior and senior years.

Klaneski has been an assistant coach with the Damien varsity football team for six years. Last year he was defensive coordinator.

He is a member of the Damien faculty, teaching physical education.

A search committee spent the month of April and into May sifting through candidates before selecting Klaneski today.
