Lia Galdeira scored a game-high 29 points, Courtney Kaupu added 16 points and Makayla Awa chipped in with 15 points yesterday as defending state champion Konawaena raced past Las Vegas power Bishop Gorman, 77-61, in the opening round of the Fifth Annual 'Iolani Prep Classic girls basketball tournament.

The Wildcats, who are ranked No. 46 in the nation by ESPN Rise, will face Oregon City (Ore.) in today's 6:30 p.m. semifinal.

Bishop Gorman, which is coming off a 25-7 season that included a conference championship, will play Mid-Pacific in today's 3:30 p.m. consolation bracket game.

Konawaena jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the first four minutes and Kaupu's steal and layup capped an 11-2 run that made it 17-6 with 1:06 remaining before Tonishia Childress sank a jumper at the buzzer to close it to 17-8.

"This was our first game out of the blocks, and we fell behind early," Lady Gaels coach Sheryl Krmpotich said. "We didn't play good defense."

A three-point play by Kaupu extended the lead to 32-18 with 2:30 left in the half, and Galdeira swished a shot from halfcourt as time expired to push the Wildcats ahead 38-25 at the break.

Awa's layup pushed the lead to 42-25 about 80 seconds into the second half, but Bishop Gorman was able to close it to 53-41 at the end of the third period on Ashlin Gross' putback at the buzzer.

Awa scored on another layup off a nifty feed from point guard Dawnyelle Awa to stretch the lead to 71-54 with 2:26 remaining, but the Lady Gaels responded with a 7-0 run that made it 71-61 after Meghan Carter's layup a minute later.

Kaupu, a junior forward, then converted a layup and two free throws in the next 30 seconds to seal the victory. Dawnyelle Awa finished with 11 points in addition to controlling the tempo and distributing the ball.

"They have scorers, and every time we cut it to 10 to get back in it, they would answer," Krmpotich said. "They play well together, they have a lot of experience and you can tell they are a veteran team. They would do well in Las Vegas. Their style is similar to some of the upper echelon teams there, and they would be one of the better teams."

April Rivers led Bishop Gorman with 17 points -- including four 3-pointers -- Ashlin Gross added 16 points and Zhane Dikes contributed 11 points.

Brea Olinda (Brea, Calif.) 49, Tsinghua (Beijing) 42

Keitra Wallace, a 6-foot senior guard/forward who will play for Pepperdine next season, scored 16 points and Taylor Spears added 13 points to lead the Ladycats, who are ranked No. 11 in the nation by USA Today.

Brea Olinda, which finished last season ranked No. 4 by ESPN Rise, will play 'Iolani in tonight's 8 o'clock semifinal.

Jiaying Ma led Tsinghua -- which is ranked No. 2 in China -- with 16 points and Danlei Feng added 10 points. Tsinghua led, 25-21, at halftime but the Ladycats took a 35-32 lead into the fourth period and held on in the fourth.

Oregon City (Ore.) 63, Mid-Pacific 36

Johanna Paine scored a game-high 28 points and Jade Lowery added 14 points as the Pioneers ran past the Owls.

Kiki Robertson led Mid-Pacific with 13 points and Megan Kinoshita added 10 points.

The Owls led, 13-8, after Pua Kanekoa's 10-foot jumper in the lane with 3:16 remaining in the first period, but Oregon City finished the quarter with a 9-2 run and then out-scored MPI 18-7 in the second to lead 35-22 at halftime before extending it to 47-31 entering the fourth.

'Iolani 67, Kaimuki 27

The Raiders led 14-6 after one period, 39-14 at the half and 59-21 entering the fourth quarter to advance.

Alex Masaquel scored 12 points and Taimane Passi added 10 for the Raiders.

Kaimuki's Dejah Fa'asoa left in the third quarter with an ankle injury.
