No. 10 Kamehameha-Hawaii pulls away from Kauai to reach D2 final

MANOA — Dominic Christensen drove in four runs to lead No. 10 Kamehameha-Hawaii to a 7-2 win over Kauai in the semifinals of the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Division II Baseball State Championships Friday. 

The Warriors, the No. 3 seed in the tournament and Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion, improved to 15-1 and will play two-time defending state champion Damien in the title game, which is set to take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at Moanalua High School. 

The second-seeded Red Raiders, the winners of the Kauai Interscholastic Federation, were trying for their second straight championship game appearance. They end their season with an 11-4 record. 

Christensen batted 2 for 2 with a double and recorded a pair of run-scoring sacrifice flys. Kamaka Ili also doubled and drove in a run. Justin Kubojiri and Kaohu Kawelu also had one RBI apiece. Kubojiri and Liwai Correa each scored a pair of runs in the win. 

Starting pitcher Noah Palea allowed two hits over three scoreless innings of work. He struck out two and walked none before he gave way to reliever Keyan Kanahele, who pitched the final four innings to get the win. 

The Warriors sandwiched single runs in the first and third innings around a four-spot in the second frame. They added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth, before the Red Raiders pushed across their only two runs in the top of the sixth. 

Dane Yamauchi batted 3 for 4 with a double and two RBI for Kauai, which used four pitchers. Starter Kapono Sullivan logged just 15 pitches in his one inning of work. He gave up one unearned run on one hit and was charged with the loss. 

The Red Raiders' last of three D2 state championships came in 2017. 

Kamehameha-Hawaii will be trying for its second state title; its only other championship came in 2016. 

The game began on Thursday at Les Murakami Stadium, but was suspended due to inclement weather in the bottom of the third inning with the Warriors holding a 6-0 lead, before it was completed Friday morning.
