Kamehameha nets golden goal in OT to advance past KS-Maui

Second-ranked Kamehameha needed overtime to get past sixth-ranked Kamehameha-Maui, getting a golden goal from Ionare Vee in the 83rd minute to advance to the semifinals of the Motiv8 Foundation/HHSAA Division I girls soccer championships at the Waipio Pennisula Complex.

The Warriors from Maui, MIL champs and the third seed in the tournament, held the ILH runner-ups scoreless through regulation, but the Kapalama Warriors made the most of a corner kick in the 83rd minute when Madison Sharrer took the set piece, and amongst the sea of humanity Vee was there to finish it for the win.

Last season, the two teams met in the state semifinals, where Kapalama prevailed 2-0, where Vee also scored a goal in the victory as well.

In another noteworthy quarterfinal, third-ranked Campbell scored a goal to close out the half and another in the opening moments of the second to earn a 2-1 victory over Waiakea.

Sierra Sam Fong made it a 1-0 game in the 40th minute, and Miyah Suster added an insurance score in the 45th for the Sabers, and that insurance paid dividends as the Warriors were able to find a late score in the 60th minute off a goal by Ailani Franklin to get within striking distance of the equalizer.

The other two quarters of the day saw top seeded Punahou shutout Baldwin, 3-0, and OIA runner-up Mililani took care of BIIF champ Hilo, 2-0.

Carly Cormack scored twice for the Buffanblu.

Play continues Friday at the main stadium back at Waipio, with the Division II semifinals beginning at 3 p.m. and the first Division I semi set for approximately 5 p.m.
