Kaiser and Pearl City are marching on.

The Cardiac Cougars found a way once again, as Ethan Yang found Mateo Garcia for a score in the 76th minute that lifted Kaiser to a last gasp win over Aiea, 3-2.

Amongst East playoff teams, Kaiser won two games and lost one by a single goal during the regular season, while tying two others.

"I dunno, I think we're just a comeback team," said Yang. "We're not a very technical team so we have to play as hard as we can and we have to have heart."

On the game clinching play, Yang was perfectly set up on a through ball by sophomore Zac Alvarado that freed him down the right side, where he shook two defenders near the end line, then beat another before setting up Garcia for the game-clincher.

"I tried not to dribble too fast cause I knew I wanted to cut in, and when I did I was planning to just shoot that," remarked Yang. "But I saw Mateo right there."

"When I saw him going wide I knew I needed to be in front of the goal so he has an easy pass," said Garcia of the play.

Things definitely started off rocky for the home team as Na Alii got on the board just six minutes courtesy of Sye Sandobal, and then went up 2-0 in the 19th minute on Sandobal's second goal.

Aiea's aggressive play equated to at least two yellow cards in the first half, which in turn led to less physical play and ultimately chances for Kaiser, who finally broke through for a score in the 35th minute, when Tayte Sato placed a throw in from about 25 yards out and found Yang, who put it away to put the home team on the board.

"There was a little space (in front of goal) and Tayte threw it in, the keeper came out and I just popped it over," said Yang.

Kaiser continued to find opportunities for the equalizer, and finally broke through in the 59th minute, when Dustin Nguyen lasered a shot from about 30 yards out, beating the keeper to make it 2-2.

"I knew it was a good oppoortunity at the top of the box so I tried angling the ball where there could be a deflection, but I got lucky and the ball went through," said Nguyen.

Timothy Hager made two saves in his first start of the season for the Cougars, and his counterpart, Reece Shintani, saved five.

PEARL CITY 3, ROOSEVELT 1

Manoa Monteiro assisted on a goal and scored another in the Charger's 3-1 win over the Rough Riders in the opening round of the OIA Division I boys soccer playoffs.

In the 77th minute, Monteiro capped a long run down the right edge with a laser shot that gave the Chargers that all important insurance goal.

"I saw the defender step really hard to the ball, got past him with a little scissors and from there it was pretty simple," said Monteiro. "I knew I needed do something to put them away, I was just doing my job."

The goal came literally seconds after Roosevelt found some life when Aaron Leon-Licona put one in the back on the net following a shot that rang off the top bar by Landen Kalani.

It was that kind of match for the Rough Riders, one filled with more than a few near-misses:

  • In the 34th minute Carl Mair's corner kick bounced around dangerously in front of goal where Matthew Tingey's shot hit off the top bar.
  • In the 37th, Kalani's shot from the right side hit the top bar and the left post before coming back into the field of play.
  • In the 68th, Kalani's penalty kick hit the near post and angled back towards the end line.

"We got kind of lucky today with a lot of the bounces," remarked Monteiro. "The ball bounced our way today."

Pearl City got its second score in the 49th minute, when Monteiro wriggled free from a tangle of Roosevelt defenders before angling a pretty pass to a waiting Ayden Peralta.

"I wasn't comfortable with just having a one-nil lead, so I just took the ball and kind of broke past the defenders and saw our guys in the box and it was just a tap in from there," said Monteiro.

The game's opening score came courtesy of Deyton Alipot in the 12th minute.
