At Kekūhaupiʻo Gym on Monday, Kamehameha swept past Kaiser, 25-10, 25-22, and 25-11 to advance to the quarterfinals of the HHSAA Division I boys volleyball championships.
Heston Cabinian led the way for Kamehameha at six kills, but it was a career night for Kanoa Monlux as he logged a team-high five aces in the win. It was also a great night for Austin Sanchez and Ayja Miller as both boys accounted for 29 of Kamehameha's 35 assists (Sanchez 16, Miller 13) in the win.
Seth Harman led the way for Kaiser with six kills. Mihael and Sebastian Stromsdorfer also accounted for all 12 of Kaiser's assists in the loss (Mihael 9, Sebastian 3).
Kamehameha had all the momentum in the first set. They shot out to an early 5-1 lead before a service error proved to be a small bump in the road. Kamehameha did not let that phase them and hit their stride again with a 16-4 run to eventually pocket the first set. A Kaiser error from Sebastian Stromsdorfer was the final nail in the coffin and Kamehameha would win set one 25-10.
In set two, Kaiser put up a fight. They shot out to an early 6-1 lead, which included a Gabe Stevens ace. Kamehameha answered back and with a 5-1 run until a service error from both Kamehameha AND Kaiser messed up their momentum. Nonetheless, Kamehameha was back in Kaiser's neighborhood.
The two teams exchanged points back and forth, but Kamehameha uncorked a 6-0 run to take the lead and prompt a Kaiser timeout. That included back-to-back Cabinian aces. However, Kaiser did not give up.
"They had pretty solid blocks on us," Monlux said. "They were stopping our attacks and forcing us to hit out, and make mistakes."
Kaiser used a 5-2 run which included a Seth Harman ace to tie up the score on three occasions. However, they could not get the lead back. Kamehameha would outscore Kaiser 4-1 in the closing stages to take set two 25-22.
Kamehameha and Kaiser were evenly matched at the start of set three. When it was tied at five, Kamehameha ignited a 14-2 run that included a whopping six aces – five from Monlux, one from Sanchez. Kaiser tried to make a late push, but the damage was just too great. Kamehameha would end the third set on a 6-0 run, which included back-to-back Brandon In aces to win it, 25-11, and complete the sweep.
"Our coach told us to stay aggressive on our serves, and that way we can put them out of system," Monlux said.
For Kaiser, their season is over and done with at 10-5 overall. As for Kamehameha, they take on inter-island rival Kamehameha Hawaii.
