PEARL CITY — No. 2 Mililani and No. 5 Pearl City started the match off with a bang, each scoring in the opening five minutes.

However, both teams would manage to shut each other out and end the game in a 1-1 draw Friday night at Bino Neves Stadium.

"It was hectic," Mililani coach Natalie Goo said of the game. "It's always fun times playing against Pearl City. It's good for our girls to get quality games like this during the regular season."

This is Goo's first year as the varsity head coach. She previously coached the Mililani junior varsity girls team.

The Trojans remain undefeated at 3-0-2 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association West standings while the Chargers are now 3-1-1.

Pearl City took the early lead in the third minute when forward Sunshine Fontes hit a nice shot past Mililani goalkeeper Sydni Nakamura.

"My little forward (Jasmine Herodies) made the goal happen," said Pearl City Coach Frank Baumholtz. "She took a ball to the corner and gave it off to Sunshine and Sunshine put it into the net."

Even though Pearl City was pressuring hard in the second half, Mililani was able to create some chances of its own. The Trojans forced Pearl City goalkeeper Naomi Takata into two game-saving one-on-one saves and junior Mehana Ortiz hit a bullet off the post.

“Really proud of my girls,” said Goo. “They executed exactly what we worked on in practice.”

After a shocking loss to Aiea last week, Baumholtz believes that his girls are only getting better.

“They (Mililani) have a great team and our team is improving,” Baumholtz said. “We have four freshmen on the field so we’re really very young. We came out totally flat against Aiea and gave them the game. We just have to keep playing at this level and not take any game for granted.”

Baumholtz credited Fontes, Takata and Saige Kalani for their leadership. Fontes believes that tonight’s game will help the team get ready for the rest of the season.

“We wanted to win this game but we just need to execute more,” said Fontes. “I think we are hungry and we want to get more win.”

The Chargers will take on Nanakuli at home next Tuesday while the Trojans will host Kapolei on the same day.
