WAIPIO — Team Rogue dominated from start to finish to sink Team Armada, 10-2, to win the 13th Annual New City Nissan Softball Classic trophy at Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park on Sunday.
The Classic was a final hurrah for 60 high school seniors, some who will play softball at the next level while others will pursue other endeavors.
Nanakuli played two Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I games this year but forfeited the rest of the season after March 3. The classic gave a pair of Golden Hawks an opportunity to close out their careers on a high note.
"It was a bunch of different people and I didn't expect to be friends with but the way we played, it felt we played for a long time and I never experienced that. We clicked and there were no cliques. We were together," Golden Hawks senior Cheyenne Lute said.
"It felt good because we didn't have a season," added Karmen Aiwohi, also from Nanakuli.
Lute pitched all seven innings to toss four strikeouts with walking one and allowing two runs in the win despite being hampered by a groin pull.
"I underestimated myself," Lute said. "I thought I was going to be rusty and I didn't pitch since February or beginning of March. I pulled my groin yesterday. I was in pain today but couldn't show it."
She played on the baseball team to keep herself busy during the spring season. Now, she will hang up the cleats as she pursues a higher calling.
"I'm going to be pursuing ministry," Lute said of her future plans.
Aiwohi went 1 for 2 on the night and brought in a run in the third inning to give Team Rogue a 4-1 cushion. Like Lute, she played her final softball game of her career.
"It felt scary since it's been a while, but it feels good to be back on the field," Aiwohi said. "It felt good to get back into it."
Team Rogue cranked out 16 hits for the game to score one or more runs in six of the seven innings. Five different players registered a double and seven different players scored a run.
Chloe Domingo (Campbell) scored three runs and brought in another to finish 3 for 4 at the plate to lead Team Rogue. Iyana Reed (Moanalua) and Kiley Ozaki (Kapolei) each hit doubles to plate runs, and Kolbee Kealoha (Saint Francis) drove in two runs on the game's second home run.
Kahilu McNicoll (Maryknoll) hit a solo home run in the second inning and Cheyne Obara (Pearl City) scored Marley Dyer (Iolani) in the bottom of the sixth inning with a deep shot to left field for Team Armada.
