Despite a slow start offensively, Hugh Hogland fell two block shots shy of completing a triple-double to help host Iolani down Kaiser, 53-36, in the first game of the first round of the Iolani Classic Friday night.

The reigning All-Hawaii boys' Player of the Year scored game-highs of 19 points, 12 rebounds and eight blocks for the Raiders (6-1). Shaun Kim led the Cougars (8-2) with 13 points, including three 3-pointers.

"I think that's what we expect of (Hogland)," Iolani coach Dean Shimamoto said. "We expect a little bit of everything from him. Some inside, some outside, block shots, rebounds. He's our every thing guy. He struggled little bit early, missed some shots, got banged around, but he stuck with it, kept coming, kept coming. You saw him get better as the game went on."

With no 6-5 Chance Kalaugher (who graduated) to counter Hogland, the Cougars had to get physical as best as they could.

"Coach Branden (Kawazoe, Kaiser's coach) is a smart coach," Hogland said. "I guess they had this defense called bump and every time I walked in the key it was bump, bump. That's all part of the game; I have to accept that. Even though it got a little heated, I just had to deal with it and just roll with it."

Though Hogland's scoring eventually came, his defense never deserted him. Eight of his 12 boards came on the defensive side.

"If I can't provide the offensive force for my teammates, I'm going to concentrate on defense, block as many shots as I can, get as many rebounds as I can. Just make my guards' life easier because they make my life easier on offense."

Iolani's offense struggled to take a 6-0 lead early; four points came off steals by Bailey Alabanza, who scored off one of the thefts.

Still, the Raiders took a 10-5 lead into the second quarter and opened a double-digit lead into the half with the help of a three-point play by Cole Hogland and 3-pointers by Ryan Van Canfort and Justin Genovia.

Iolani opened the second half with an 8-0 run to take a commanding 19-point lead. Then the teams went on a 3-point exchange, combining for seven. Genovia had two, and Alabanza and Hugh Hogland each had one to Kaiser's three from Cameron Ma, Hunter Dias and Kim. Still, Iolani had a sizeable 47-25 lead going into the fourth.

With reserves opening the fourth for Iolani, Kaiser used a 7-0 run to pull to 47-32. Starters returned to restore order with a 6-0 run, four of the points coming from Hugh Hogland.

"We told our guys on the bench they need to be a little bit more ready when play," Shimamoto said. "Kaiser's a good team. They fight, they scratch, they claw. They're not just going to walk away."

Despite the 17-point differential, Kawazoe liked his team's effort.

"I just like they way we fought," Kawazoe said. "It's a brand-new team. Everything's a learning process. I thought we got better today. It's a good test going up against one of the top teams in the state. It's just great to be a part of this prestigious tournament again. We're just taking things in stride and hoping to get better every day."
