Punahou's Lam to try for third singles' crown Saturday


Punahou's Kawika Lam will try for his third boys' singles title Saturday in the final day of the Carlsmith Ball/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Tennis State Championships at Patsy T. Mink/Central Oahu Regional Park.

Lam, the No. 1 seed in the 32-person draw, defeated fifth-seeded Andre Ilagan of Farrington 6-4 and 6-0 before sweeping past sixth-seeded Junichi Minakata of Hawaii Baptist 6-1 and 6-1. He will be opposed in the final by second-seeded Jeffrey Liang of Hawaii Baptist, who beat Maui's Joey Baldwin, the eighth seed, 6-1 and 6-0 in the quarterfinals before topping Punahou's McKenna Fujitani, the third seed, 6-3 and 7-6(7) in the semifinals.

Defending champion Taylor Lau of Saint Francis, the top seed in the girls' singles draw, defeated unseeded Michelle Uyeda of Kealakehe in the quarterfinals 6-0 and 6-2 before beating third-seeded Emily Soares of Hilo 6-0 and 6-1 in the semifinal round. Lau will take on second-seeded Skyla Alcon of Mid-Pacific, who swept past her teammate, sixth-seeded Tristen Bryant-Otake, 6-2 and 6-2, in the quarterfinals and Punahou's Ashley Ishimura, the fourth seed, 7-6(4) and 6-2, in the semifinals.

Both doubles' finals will feature the top seeds. Top-seeded Jordan Azuma and Phuc Hyunh of Iolani will meet second-seeded Austin Hamamoto and Travis Lau of Punahou in the boys' final, while top-seeded Sarah Ikioka and Kylee Kato of Kamehameha-Maui will take on second-seeded Katreina Corpuz and Alyssia Fossorier of Punahou in the girls' final.

Matches will begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
