Punahou sweeps team titles at state tennis Saturday


Punahou swept the boys' and girls' team titles at the Carlsmith Ball/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Tennis State Championships Saturday at the Wailea Tennis Club on Maui.

It was the 12th consecutive year that the Buffanblu took home both team crowns. The boys won for the 24th consecutive year and 46h time overall in school history, while the girls claimed their 12th straight title and 40th in school history.

Punahou easily won the boys' title — led by two-time state champion Kawika Lam — with 28 points. Runner-up Mililani finished with nine points, Mid-Pacific was third with seven points and Iolani and Hawaii Baptist had six points to finish tied for fourth.

Lam defeated Hawaii Baptist's Jeffrey Liang 6-7(6), 6-0 and 6-2 in the boys' singles final. The Buffanblu's duo of Zander Kim and Jon Costales won the doubles' title 6-1 and 6-0 over Seann Esaki and Braxton Chong of Mid-Pacific.

Punahou accumulated 12 points to finish atop the girls' team standings. Mililani and Mid-Pacific tied for second with nine points and Saint Francis and Iolani tied for fourth with eight points.

Saint Francis' Taylor Lau upset Mililani's Alyssa Tobita in the girls' singles final 6-1 and 6-3. Tobita was seeking her fourth consecutive individual state title.

Skyla Alcon and Cori Cummings, of Mid-Pacific, won the girls' doubles final over Iolani's Sari Kwee and Kara Okazaki 6-7(6), 7-5 and 5-0.
