The New City Nissan/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I Boys Volleyball State Championships got underway Friday afternoon with four first-round matches on Oahu and stretches to three islands in Saturday's quarterfinal round.

Kamehameha-Hawaii, the third seed and Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion, will play Kamehameha-Kapalama, which defeated Kahuku in a sweep, 25-14, 25-18, 25-23, in a first-round match at Kalani's Earl C. Holmer Gymnasium. Kamehameha-Hawaii had a bye and will play host to their schoolmates from Oahu in one of four 3 p.m. quarterfinals Saturday.

In other quarterfinal matches: top-seed and Interscholastic League of Honolulu champ Punahou will host the winner of Waiakea-Kalaheo, second-seed and Oahu Interscholastic Association titlist Moanalua plays the Baldwin-Campbell winner and fourth-seed and Maui Interscholastic League winner King Kekaulike gets the Leilehua-Waianae winner.

The Kapalama Warriors (11-4) finished second in the ILH behind the Buffanblu. Senior outside hitter Kaehu Kaaa had match-highs of 18 kills and three service aces the last time they played, when Punahou beat Kamehameha in four sets in the ILH final 10 days ago. Their only losses this season have come against the Buffanblu. David Kaaa, George Kailiwai and Bryson Barian-Garcia are among the other offensive options for Kapalama.

The Big Island Warriors (13-0) swept past Waiakea 25-15, 25-16, 27-25 in the BIIF chmapionship final Saturday in Kailua-Kona. They were led in the win by senior outside hitter Evan Enriques, who put down a match-high 27 kills, while Emmet Enriques added 10 kills and Kekaulike Alameda had 17 digs. Evan Enriques is signed to play for Stanford next year. Kamehameha-Hawaii played on Oahu just three weeks ago in the Clash of the Titans two-day tournament, hosted by Punahou.

Kamehameha-Kapalama and Kamehameha-Hawaii met in the 2012 state quarterfinal round, with the Big Island Warriors winning in four sets. They reached the state final that year, but lost in a five-set thriller to Punahou.

The quarterfinal winners advance to the final four on Oahu next week. Semifinals will be played at McKinley's Student Council Gymnasium Friday. The action moves to the Neal S. Blaisdell Center Arena Saturday.
